Skin issues – Understand and manage your Winter skin woes

As the crisp, chilly winds of winter set in, many of us eagerly anticipate the festive season, hot cocoa and cosy blankets. However, along with the holiday cheer, the winter months often bring a less-welcome guest: skin issues. From dryness and itchiness to redness and chapping, winter can wreak havoc on our skin.

Below, we explore the reasons why skin issues tend to flare up during the winter. We also provide helpful tips on how to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

1. Low humidity levels

One of the primary culprits behind winter skin problems is the drop in humidity.

When the air is cold and dry, it can lead to moisture loss from the skin resulting in dryness and itching. This is exacerbated when our natural protective barrier is compromised. With a compromised barrier, we experience even more water loss. As a result of this, more nasty elements (such as pollution) can reach the delicate tissue underneath aggravating the skin further.

To combat this problem, make sure to protect your skin at all times with an SPF daily. If needed, choose a moisturiser rich in emollients to provide some extra comfort. You might think that wearing an SPF in winter is a bit ridiculous, however, it is always one of the most important steps – no matter the season! Think of your SPF as your shield, protecting your skin from all the gross particles outdoors.

2. Hot showers

During the winter, there’s nothing quite like a hot shower to chase away the chill.

Unfortunately, as with the temperature outside, hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it parched and prone to irritation. Opt for lukewarm showers instead and limit your time soaking to 10-15 minutes to help your skin retain its natural oils.

3. Harsh skincare products

Using harsh skincare products that contain alcohol or other drying ingredients can be particularly detrimental to your skin at any time of the year.

Choosing medical grade products that can be effective whilst staying gentle, let your skin recover some of that moisture and hydration.

4. Not adapting skincare to the seasons

Your skins needs change with the seasons.

What works during the humid summer months may not be suitable for winter. In the winter, consider switching to a richer, creamier cleanser to help nourish the irritated barrier.

You may need products that focus on hydration in the winter and protection in the summer. Treat your skincare like your wardrobe and wear more seasonally.
