In this blog, I’m going to talk about all things skin tags – what they are, why they appear, and most importantly, the safest way to remove skin tags with minimal discomfort and little to no risk of scarring.
If you have unwanted skin tags you’d like removed, or you simply want to understand them better, keep reading.
What are skin tags?
A skin tag is a very common, benign skin growth that can present itself in multiple colours, shapes and sizes.
These are some examples:

Where Are Skin Tags Most Commonly Found?
Skin tags can appear almost anywhere on the body, but they’re most commonly found in areas of friction, such as:
-
The neck
-
Armpits
-
Groin
-
Under the breasts
That said, I’ve removed skin tags from many different areas over the years – including eyelids and even between the eyelashes – so their location isn’t always limited to these areas.
Are Skin Tags Dangerous or Cancerous?
No – skin tags are not dangerous and they are not cancerous. They are completely benign.
However, over time they can grow larger and become irritated, sore, or uncomfortable, particularly if they’re rubbing against clothing, jewellery, or skin.
What Causes Skin Tags?
There isn’t just one cause of skin tags. In my experience, they tend to develop due to a combination of factors, including:
-
Friction – Clothing, jewellery, or skin rubbing against skin
-
Age – Skin tags often become more common as we get older
-
Genetics – If skin tags run in your family, you may be more prone to them
-
Hormonal changes – Pregnancy, menopause, and PCOS can increase skin tag growth
- Diabetes or high blood pressure – There is a strong link between skin tags and insulin resistance, meaning they can sometimes be a sign of underlying metabolic issues
Is It a Skin Tag or a Mole?
It can be difficult to assess skin blemishes yourself, as some moles and skin tags can look very similar. This is why we offer a free skin blemish analysis, which you can book here:

Do Skin Tags Need to Be Removed?
No – skin tags don’t have to be removed.
However, if a skin tag starts to bother you, feels sore, gets caught, or becomes irritated, removal is often the best option to prevent ongoing discomfort.
Can I Remove Skin Tags at Home?
I wouldn’t recommend it.
I’ve seen many clients who have attempted DIY skin tag removal at home, and unfortunately it often leads to unnecessary trauma, bleeding, infection, or scarring, without fully removing the skin tag. Home methods also lack sterile equipment, which significantly increases the risk of infection.
What Is the Best Professional Method for Skin Tag Removal?
My preferred method for removing skin tags (as well as many other benign skin blemishes) is Advanced Electrolysis.
This treatment uses controlled heat from a specialist electrolysis machine and a fine, sterile needle to remove the skin tag safely and precisely. It’s a chemical-free, clean, and highly effective procedure.
Why I Choose Advanced Electrolysis for Skin Tag Removal
Advanced Electrolysis offers several key benefits:
- Millimetre-accurate treatment
